Hardback
Publisher's Weekly
The most arresting part of this generally humdrum futuristic adventure, which presents a scenario for a Warsaw Pact assault into West Germany in 1989, is the action that follows the eventual invasion. Unfortunately, it is too little, too late. Nearly two-thirds of the book consists of a rather slow-moving, conventional political thriller in which charismatic and powerful West German Chancellor Ernst Rudel pulls Germany out of NATO and plans to develop a German nuclear force, a clear threat to the arms pact negotiated by the American and Soviet leaders. Rudel's actions throw both the U.S. and Soviet leadership into disarray as the balance of power in Europe is seriously altered. Amid defections, assassination plots and high placed Soviet spies within the German government, American CIA agent Paul Brand attempts to head off a nuclear confrontation as the Soviet army begins its push into Germany. Jones's Rubicon One had more pizzaz.

Library Journal
Jones has crafted a complicated and highly realistic novel of international espionage and suspense. The title (a perverse allusion to a Nazi plan for the invasion of the Soviet Union) refers to a Russian plan to invade Western Europe. The Russians have placed a high-ranking spy, the foreign minister, in the West German cabinet. A defector's revelation of this treachery precipitates a scandal. The West German chancellor does not resign as expected but stubbornly stays on, and despite everyone's best intentions war inevitably occurs in Europe. As the story of the politics that created the need for Barbarossa Red and the resulting war is so complicated, the cast of characters is large and not one is particularly memorable. However, the detailed scenes are very memorable, compelling, and eerily possible. The intricate political maneuvers are occasionally confusing but constitute a frighteningly real scenario. Recommended. Jean B. Palmer, Phillips Acad. Lib., Andover, Mass.

The first book in the Gaean Reach series
When Schaine Madduc returned to Koryphon after five years in space, her home planet was not as she left it. The several intelligent species that had lived so long in a sort of symbiotic harmony were at each other's throats. Most prominently, the humanoid Uldra were united in rebellion against the human land-holding community of which Schaine was part. But Schaine was even more a part than she realized, for the Uldra revolutionary leader and catalyst-the Gray Prince Jorjol-was actually an Uldra fostered in Schaine's own home, and upon whom Schaine had exerted a profound influence. An influence far more profound than Schaine would have thought possible. An influence possibly powerful enough to smash her home, her family, and her entire way of life!

A book in the Honor Harrington Universe series
The Star Kingdom has a new generation of officers! And this elite group hand-picked and trained by Honor Harrington herself is going to be needed immediately, as their first assignment turns out to be more dangerous than anyone expected. What was supposed to be a quiet outpost, far from the blazing conflict between the Star Kingdom of Manticore and the People's Republic of Haven has actually been targeted by an unholy alliance between the slaveholders of Manpower, the rival star kingdoms of Mesa and Monica, and the bureaucrats of the Solarian League. The alliance stands to benefit if the Havenites defeat Manticore, and are preparing for a surprise attack from the rear to divide Manticore's forces, which are already strained nearly to their limits. With their captain, the young Manticoran officers will risk their careers, if not their lives, on an unauthorized mission to expose and counter the threat to their Star Kingdom. Follow their journey as they show what they're made of as New York Times best-selling author David Weber begins a new series that will be a must for the hundreds of thousands of Honor Harrington fans.

Hardback
'My Word!', one of the most popular radio programmes in the world, celebrates its 25th anniversary in autumn 1980. At the heart of its astonishing international appeal lie the hilariously punning stories of modern (and ancient) life told by Frank Muir and Denis Norden. The 'My Word!' sotries have become an oral and literary genre in their own right, the fules of which (each story purports to explain a well-known phrase or quotation) are almost as fiercely demanding as the sonnet form. In the hands of the creators and grand masters of the genre its possibilities for comedy of allusion and observation (not to mention tragical-historical-pastoral) are almost limitless. In these stories All Human Life is There.

The Moon's a Balloon #2
David Niven is remembered as one of Britain's best-loved actors. The archetypal English gentleman, he starred in over ninety films. He is also one of Hollywood's finest chroniclers. In this second volume, David Niven turns his attention to 'The Great Days of Hollywood' between 1935 and 1960. These were times of legendary film stars and despotic producers, of tycoons, of oddballs, and of classic movies.Rich in anecdote, and written in his inimitable humorous style, BRING ON THE EMPTY HORSES is perhaps the most acclaimed sequel to an autobiography ever written.

Paperback
Reminiscences, Volume 2
He has had one of the most varied lives, as well as one of the most spectacular film careers, of our time. Expelled from school, baptized by the Army and a London whore, David amusingly recounts his early adventures.
In America, where he was treated with endearing hospitality, he became a bootlegger, an organizer of Indoor Pony Races, and finally, through a peice of luck which would seem impossible if it were not true, he sailed his way into Hollywood studios and stardom.
His wartime experiences (he served with the legendary 'Phantom') are treated with characteristic modesty; and thereafter his return to Hollywood leads to a rather chequered career (including being fired by Goldwyn and winning an Oscar) and also to the greatest tragedy of his life - the death of his beautiful first wife. This is one of the most amusing, outspoken, self-revealing, warm-hearted and touching autobiographies ever to be published.

Mary Hetherington was a mother who dominated her family. She was kind, efficient and generous-providing they did what she wanted. But when David brought home Sarah from the 'wrong end' of the Fifteen Streets, a girl who brought life and laughter into her dustless house, she soon took against her.

Then when she discovered that Sarah was loved not just by David but by all her menfolk, Mary Hetherington realised that this 'interloper', if allowed to go unchecked, would become a challenge to her authority-while Sarah, for her part, found that even the best people had their quarrels, and secrets they were anxious to hide...
Paperback
Using the firsthand expertise she has gained through writing the bestselling Dr Kay Scarpetta novels, Patricia Cornwell utilizes the demanding methods of modern forensic investigation to re-examine the evidence in the Jack the Ripper murders. These include state-of-the-art DNA testing on various materials, computer enhancement of watermarks and expert examinations of hand-writing, paper, inks and other relics. She also uses her knowledge of profiling on the possible suspects, as well as consulting experts in the field. On presenting her conclusions to a very senior Metropolitan Police officer she learns that had the investigators of the time been presented with the facts she has unearthed, her suspect would definitely have been arrested and would probably have faced trial. Naming the killer as the artist, Walter Sickert, Cornwell details the reasons and evidence for this conclusion.

Paperback
Many English personalities, great and small, of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries owe their third dimensions to the antiquanrian John Aubrey, that assiduous compiler of gossip and hearsay. His disjointed jottings, however inaccurate and ribald, are delightfully phrased and invariably entertaining.

Itis from Aubrey that we learn of Shakespeare that, as a youth, 'when he kill'd a Calfe he would do it in a high style, and make a Speech'; of Francis Bacon that he met his death while experimenting in regrigeration; of Ben Jonson that 'he would many times exceed in drink (Canarie was his beloved liquor)'; and a thousand other intimate and curious details about men and woman of the time

Paperback
The second book in the Red Barbarian series
Among the soaring peaks and sheer cliffs of the Shansi mountains lies a valley carpeted in white poppies. An idyllic scene - but the poppies are the source of the deadly drug opium. To millions they spell Death.

Donald Caraadine and Jin-see Tyson are united in their loathing of the filthy trade that made their fathers wealthy. They have sworn to destroy it. When Jin-see's son Great Dragon at last gains access as a Mandarin to the Emoress herself, their victory seems in sight. But a plan whose success will make rich men poorer must always be fraught with danger. And it is against a background of kidnapping, muder and bitter betrayal that Kin-see fights the battle that threatens ultimately to destroy him.

From Hong Kong's Fragrant Harbor to the lakes and silver birches of the Summer Palace, as the Boxers rise with Imperial support against the foreign presence, White Poppy paints a portrait of China and her history impossible to forget

He was the handsome and talented. For him medicine was the road to riches and respectability.

But he found that a doctor's life needed sacrifice and dedication, that the rich and fashionable world of a New Orleans society doctor could not compensate for the emptiness he felt. And he found that his lovely sensual wife, Hester, would not be permanently tied to one man.

This is the story of Duncan Childers' fight to escape his destiny. It pursues its tempestuous course from the slums of New Orleans to the salons of Vienna, through the terror or a yellow fever epidemic to the tension-laden moments of a heart operation.

Paperback
The first book in the Nanny Diaries series
WANTED:One young woman to take care of four-year-old boy. Must be cheerful, enthusiastic, and selfless--bordering on masochistic. Must relish sixteen-hour shifts with a deliberately nap-deprived preschooler. Must love geting thrown up on, literally and figuratively, by everyone in his family. Must enjoy the delicious anticipation of ridiculously erratic pay. Mostly, must love being treated like fungus found growing out of employer's Hermes bag. Those who take it personally need not apply. Who wouldn't want this job? Struggling to graduate from NYU and afford her microscopic studio apartment, Nanny takes a position caring for the only son of the wealthy X family. She rapidly learns the insane amount of juggling involved to ensure that a Park Avenue wife, who doesn't work, cook, clean, or raise her own child, has a smooth day. When the X's marriage begins to disintegrate, Nanny ends up involved way beyond the bounds of human decency or good taste. Her tenure with the X family becomes a nearly impossible mission to maintain the mental health of their four-year-old, her own integrity, and, most important, her sense of humor. Over nine tense months, Mrs. X and Nanny perform the age-old dance of decorum and power as they test the limits of modern-day servitude.

Hardback
Book 11 in the Harry Bosch series
The Closers puts Harry Bosch back in the Los Angelese Police Department, where he was meant to be, and sets him to solving old cases, which is what he always did best, alongside Kiz Rider, who was always the best of the partners fate, and Connolly, gave him. They are working on the death of a bi-racial teenager back in the 1980s, abducted from her bedroom and shot dead. The racial tensions of the time are clearly a factor - the DNA of a known racist is trapped in blood on the gun - but in a Michael Connolly novel, things are never as simple as they seem. And Bosch finds, not to his especial surprise, that he has been asked back into the LAPD as someone's weapon in the dance of departmental politics. The death of Backy Verloren was a tragedy - the investigation of her murder was a series of mistakes that left her father an alcoholic mess and her mother an obsessive trapped in the past, and someone profited by their misery. Connolly is always at his best when Harry is caught up in the problems of other people, rather than his own, and this excellent, twisty police procedural is a snappy return to form.

The sixth book in the Rutshire Chronicles series
Sir Roberto Rannaldini, the most successful but detested conductor in the world, had two ambitions: to seduce his ravishing nineteen-year-old stepdaughter, Tabitha Campbell-Black, and to put his mark on musical history by making the definitive film of Verdi's darkest opera, Don Carlos.

As Rannaldini, Tristan, his charismatic French director, a volatile cast and bolshy French crew gather at Rannaldini's haunted abbey for filming, it is inevitable that violent fewuds, abandoned bonking, temperamental screaming, and devious plotting will ensue. But although everyone wished Rannaldini dead, no one actually thought the Maestro would be murdered. Or that after the dreadful deed some very bizarre things would continue to occur.

Through her research on twins and the genetic components of aggression, scientist Jeannie Ferrami makes a startling discovery. Using a restricted FBI database, she finds two young men who appear to be identical twins: Steve, a law student, and Dennis: a convicted murderer. Yet they were born on different days, to different mothers, in hospitals hundreds of miles apart.

As Ferrami delves into their backgrounds, she unwittingly locks horns with some of the most powerful forces in America, including the university where she works, The New York Times, even the Pentagon.

What secret has Ferrami uncovered? Can she trust her boss and mentor, or must she put her life in the hands of Steve Logan, the twin she finds herself falling in love with--even though he's surrounded by intrigue and suspicion? But one thing is certain: There are those who will stop at nothing to keep their chilling conspiracy in the shadows. . .
A Masterpiece of Historical Fiction-The Great Novel of America's "Greatest Generation" Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events-and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II-as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

Paperback
In my eyes she had always been old, always been mine, always been Granny Dan. But in another time, another place, there had been dancing, people, laughter, love...

She was the cherished grandmother who sang songs in Russian, loved to roller skate, and spoke little of her past. But when Granny Dan died, all that remained was a box wrapped in brown paper. Inside, an old pair of satin ballet shoes, a gold locket, and a stack of letters tied with ribbon. It was her legacy, a secret past, waiting to be discovered by the granddaughter who loved her but never really knew her. It was a story waiting to be told.

The year was 1902. A motherless young girl arrived at ballet school in St Petersburg. By the age of seventeen Danina Petrovskova was forced to make a heartbreaking choice - as the world around her was about to change forever. In this extraordinary novel a simple box, filled with mementos from a grandmother, offers a long-forgotten history of youth and beauty, love and dreams.

Second Hand Book Condition Good
Paperback
2 Books in 1

NOTHING LASTS FOREVER:
Three young doctors -- their hopes, their dreams, their unexpected desires...Dr. Paige Taylor. She swore it was euthanasia, but when Paige inherited a million dollars from a patient, the D.A. called it a murder. Dr. Kat Hunter. She vowed never to let another man too close again -- until she accepted the challenge of a deadly bet. Dr. Honey Taft. To make it in medicine, she knew she'd need something more than the brains God gave her.
NOTHING LASTS FOREVER races from the life-and-death decisions of a big San Francisco hospital to the tension-packed fireworks of a murder trial. It lays bare the ambitions and fears of healers and killers, lovers and betrayers. As the story surges toward its unpredictable climax, Sidney Sheldon proves once again that no reader can outguess the master of the unexpected.

TELL ME YOUR DREAMS:
Someone was following her. She had read about stalkers, but they belonged in a different, faraway world. She had no idea who it could be, who would want to harm her. She was trying desperately hard not to panic, but lately her sleep had been filled with nightmares, and she had awakened each morning with a feeling of impending doom. Thus begins Sidney Sheldon's chilling novel, Tell Me Your Dreams. Three beautiful young women are suspected of committing a series of brutal murders. The police make an arrest that leads to one of the most bizarre murder trials of the century. Based on actual events, Sheldon's novel races from London to Rome to Quebec City to San Francisco, with a climax that will leave the reader stunned.

Paperback
A richly evocative saga of glorious ancient India

Set in fourth century India, Fast's novel about subterfuge, thwarted romance and royal schemers depicts actual historical figures. Villainous Prince Rama, son of bombastic King Samudra Gupta, rues the fact that his harelip may prevent him from becoming India's sovereign after Samudra's death. To prevent his infant half-brother, Prince Candra, from later ascending to power, Rama instigates an abortive plot to murder the child. The king discovers the plan, and cunningly safeguards Candra by giving him a new identity as the son of a local silk merchant, staging a mock funeral to dupe the public into thinking Candra has died. Years later, Candranow called Dattakafalls in love with Rama's prospective bride. The lovers must part when Rama uncovers their liaison, and Dattaka flees to China disguised as a Buddhist monk, but he will eventually meet Rama in an awesome battlefield clash. Fast is a skilled raconteur, although a profusion of minor characters and of Sanskrit vocabulary slow the narrative.

Every jury has a leader, and the verdict belongs to him. In Biloxi, Mississippi, a landmark trial with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake begins routinely, then swerves mysteriously off course. The jury is behaving strangely, and at least one juror is convinced he's being watched. Soon they have to be sequestered. Then a tip from an anonymous young woman suggests she is able to predict the jurors' increasingly odd behaviour. Is the jury somehow being manipulated? If so, by whom? And, more importantly, why?

Paperback
Daisy Miller (1878) by Henry James is the story of the exuberant and nave Daisy Miller, a young American girl who flirts and partakes of young life to its fullest while visiting Europe. Daisy meets the more subtle and self-aware Winterbourne and their romance ends in misfortune.
The portrait of Daisy is a quintessential exploration of the social mores of her era. And her flirtatious disregard of them is simultaneously a breath of fresh air and the heart of tragedy.

Hardback
An epic of massive betrayal from the master of action. Joel Converse is a highly successful American lawyer and hero of Vietnam. He is an intelligent but cold man, embittered by his war experiences. On business in Geneva he is approached by an old school friend under an assumed name, who puts Converse on the track of a group of leading right-wing generals whose intention is world domination. Then his friend is murdered -- and with his death the carnage starts. A reluctant Converse becomes both the tracker and the hunted, as everywhere he turns men are killed and he is implicated in their murder. He becomes the most wanted man in Europe, running both from the forces of good and the forces of evil: a man alone, increasingly forced into violence, a puppet manipulated by both sides, his only objective to stop the international conspiracy before it is too late.

Paperback
The fifth book in the Rutshire Chronicles series
Abigail Rosen, nicknamed Appassionata, was the sexiest, most flamboyant violinist in classical music, but she was also the loneliest and the most exploited girl in the world. When a dramatic suicide attempt destroyed her violin career, she set her sights on the male-dominated heights of the conductor's rostrum.

Given the chance to take over the Rutminster Symphony Orchestra, Abby is ecstatic, not realising the RSO is in hock up to its neck and is composed of the wildest bunch of musicians ever to blow a horn or caress a fiddle. Abby finds it increasingly difficult to control her undisciplined rabble and pretend she is not madly attracted to the fatally glamorous horn player, Viking O'Neill, who claims droit de seigneur over every pretty woman joining the orchestra. And then Rannaldini, arch-fiend and international maestro, rolls up with Machiavellian plans of his own to sabotage the RSO.

Effervescent as champagne, Jilly Cooper's novel brings back old favourites like Rupert and Taggie Campbell-Black, but also ends triumphantly with a rampageous orchestral tour of Spain and the high drama of an international piano competition.

Outside of Pakistan, the world's highest concentration of al-Qaeda lurks in South-East Asia and there, Nick Stone's bosses get wind of an act of terror that will dwarf even the nightmare of 9/11.When Stone is despatched to Malaysia by the CIA to assassinate a biochemist, he expects his mission to be a straightforward part of the fight against Bin Laden. But there are complications, not least because he is working alongside an attractive woman whose motives he doesn?t fully understand. Target neutralized, Stone returns to the USA and a maelstrom of personal problems. Kelly, the fourteen-year-old orphan to whom he is joint guardian, cannot escape the ghosts of her traumatic past; she has a prescription drug habit that's spiralling out of control, and Stone knows he is the only one who can help her. He takes her to recuperate in England, but the terrible consequences of what happened in Penang are never far behind.Realizing he cannot escape them, Stone unearths a doomsday threat against the populations of New York, London and Berlin and finds himself facing an unspeakable trade-off: the life of someone he loves, against those of millions he doesn't even know.

On 17 April 1986 a British television journalist was kidnapped in Beirut. His name was John McCarthy and he was to remain a hostage for the next five years. During those years he was cut off from everything and everybody he knew and loved, from family, friends, and, perhaps above all, from Jill Morrell, the girl he was going to marry. For five years, John McCarthy had to endure the deprivation - both physical and psychological - of captivity; the filth and the squalor of the cells in which he was kept; the agony of isolation and repeated self-examination; the pain of ignorance, of not knowing if those he loved even realized he was alive. For Jill Morrell, the five years of John's captivity were a different kind of hell: the initial shock and disbelief; the gradual acceptance that John had been taken and that her life was changed irrevocably, that all their plans had been shattered. But even as she began to pick up the threads of her life, she was refusing to give up hope. For five years she battled with the mandarins of the Foreign Office; she and a group of friends launched the Friends of John McCarthy, and worked ceaselessly on the behalf of all the British hostages in the Middle East, until the extraordinary day in August 1991 when John McCarthy stepped down from an aeroplane at RAF Lyneham.

Hardback
Veteran adventure and suspense writer MacLean returns to sea in his latest effort, which is set aboard the British hospital ship San Andreas en route from Halifax to Aberdeen during World War II. The first sign of trouble on board occurs when the ship's lights fail just before dawn. Then the vessel comes under a bombing attack that severely damages its superstructure and sinks its escort frigate. Bo's'n Archie McKinnon must take charge of the damaged ship and steer it to safety despite German aircraft, submarines, and sabotage. He must also learn the reason for German interest in the San Andreas . A tribute to the men of the British merchant fleet during World War II, this is for fans of the genre. Literary Guild featured alternate. William C. McCully, Park Ridge P.L., Ill.

Paperback
As a child, Elizabeth White was sent from her war-torn London home to a safer life in the small Irish town of Kilgarret. It was there, in the crowded, chaotic O'Connor household, that she met Aisling-who would become her very best friend, sharing her pet kitten and secretly teaching her the intricacies of Catholicism. Aisling's boldness brought Elizabeth out of her proper shell; later, her support carried Elizabeth through the painful end of her parents' chilly marriage. In return, Elizabeth's friendship helped Aisling endure her own unsatisfying marriage to a raging alcoholic. Through the years, they always believed they could survive anything, as long as they had each other. Now they're about to find out if they were right...

Paperback
When Mary Flinders sets off on a journey that will take her from the quiet Irish countryside to the bustle of London, she has little idea of the new life about to begin.
But it is with silent engineering genius Matt Sullivan that Mary finds both true love and a successful business partner. Basing their talents and fortune on England's rapidly expanding canal networks, Mary and Matt become a willing part of the adventurous times. Once Judge Atlee was a powerful figure in Clanton, Mississippi - a pillar of the community who towered over local law and politics for forty years. Now the judge is a shadow of his former self, a sick, lonely old man who has withdrawn to his sprawling ancestral home. Knowing the end is near, Judge Atlee has issued a summons for his two sons to return to Clanton to discuss his estate. Ray Atlee is the eldest, a Virginia law professor, newly single and still enduring the aftershocks of a surprise divorce. Forrest is Ray's younger brother, who redefines the notion of a family's black sheep.
The summons is typed by the judge himself, on his handsome old stationery, and gives the date and time for Ray and Forrest to appear in his study. Ray reluctantly heads south to his hometown, to the place where he grew up and now prefers to avoid. But the family meeting does not take place. The judge dies too soon, and in doing so leaves behind a shocking secret known only to Ray.

And perhaps someone else.

Simon of Winslade had just one thing in mind when he claimed his sweet Ysabeau's yielding lips: seduction. Too long she had tempted him with the melting innocence of her soft, dark eyes; too long she had held herself aloof, expecting him to abide by the strict code of courtly love. Now, in one night of swirling ecstacy, he would show her that there are better places for a beautiful woman than a lofty pedestal ... and better things for a virile man than following the rules.

The General handed me the phone "It's for you. Won't give me his name."

The words came over the wire in a deep, dark, throaty whisper: "If you want to see the little lady alive again, lay off."

My heart did a somersault and landed on its back with a thud. I said "what the hell are you talking about"?

"I mean the beautiful Mrs Cavell. I have her. She would like to speak to you." A moment's silence, then - "Pierre? Oh, my dear, I'm so sorry-"

Her voice broke off abruptly in a gasp followed by a scream of agony. Silence. Again the dark whisper. "Lay off, Cavell," and the click of a replaced received...

Paperback
The people of Lancashire called him Billy London, although that wasn't his real name. But he came from Longdon's East End and settled in the north, a mean, dark secretive man who was interested only in lining his pockets at the expense of those around him - most especially his wife and daughters.

Ellen, his wife, bore with him for years, until she found her children threatened. Then she was prepared to fight like a new tigress to protect the four girls, give them a chance of a new and better life, and chance to escape from the evil and oppressive legacy of Billy London.

There was Abigail, clever, ambitious, and with an outer shell of steel that life had taught her was necessary if she was to survive. Tishy, overwhelmingly lovely, who lived in a world all her own. Marie, brisk, capable, and nearly strong enough to defy her father on her own. And Theresa, more wounded, more vulnerable, more damaged by Bill than any of them.

As the sirens of 1939 heralded the advent of war, so Billy London's girls began their own battle for new, triumphant, and fulfilling lives.

Jan Willem Hendryk's legacy amounts to a staggering $40 million - $34 million to go to an agricultural college in Kenya's Rift Valley, and the remaining $6 million to be divided equally between his only surviving descendants: Dirk, a South African, and Henry, a young drop-out living in California. But a number of suspicious circumstances emerge, including a clause in the will stating that Dirk must spend one month of every year in Kenya. What seems at first a simple matter of greed gradually assumes sinister proportions.

Paperback
Ireland - the Emeral Isle - a land of ever-changing landscapes and climates, home to a proud and charismatic people. The peace and calm of its tiny villages mask a growing resentment towards the British presence. Rory Riordan dared to challenge this new authority to defend his land and heritage; now he lives under an assumed name in the frozen forests of Canada, too terrified to return home to a country that calls him a criminal and a family that fears for his life.

Bridget Riordan, with her rich auburn hair and curvaceous bod, is a woman too beautiful for her own good. Shunned by her own sister, Sheelagh, she blatantly exaggerates her sensual nature and flaunts her ability to bewitch any man she chooses. But although Bridget craves the attention of all men, she longs for the love of one man - the father of her daughter, Leah.

As the threat of world war grows stronger, the Riordans draw closer to each other, prepared to forgive the black sheep of their family, But can Rory or Bridget ever forget that 'He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind'?

Paperback
From beloved bestselling author Barbara Taylor Bradford comes the enthralling saga of three generations of extraordinary women-of the fate that befalls them, and the choices that define their lives...IN THE NAME OF LOVE.Orphaned after the death of her mother, well-bred Audra Kenton rose from selfless nurse to servant of an affluent suffragette, to a fiercely independent bride whose passionate marriage was overtaken by an unforeseeable tragedy. Now Audra has but one dream-to bestow upon her brilliantly artistic daughter, every opportunity that she was denied...AT THE HEART OF AMBITION.Given the world, the stubborn Christina has forsaken the wishes of her noble mother to forge the career of her choice-that of a glittering Manhattan fashion empire she hopes to bequeath to her own daughter. But in young and beautiful Kyle stirs a spirit that is inherently headstrong, equally independent, and just as ironically resistant to the sacrifices made in the name of love.FOR THE SAKE OF A DREAM.From the picturesque Yorkshire Dales to the haute couture luxuries of Paris and London to the bittersweet respite of home and family, three women face stunning betrayals and astonishing reversals of fate as each brings her own intimate struggle to their need of personal success and to a triumphant and heartening understanding of devotion, duty, and destiny.

Hardback
It was October when Laura Snow decided to run away. She had a near-perfect husband, two teenage daughters, and a languid and easy life style. Richard protected her from every possible stress, dissuaded her from taking a job, was a better cook and manager than she was, and bore, with amused condescension, her efforts to write. Laura felt she was gradually being stifled to death.

She made her plans very carefully--two, or perhaps three weeks--no more--away from the family, from people, in which to savour peace and isolation and try to write.

The small cottage, hugging the side of a Cornish cliff, was perfect for her solitary desires, but almost at once she became involved in real and more besetting problems than her own need for identity. Two men began to dominate her life: Joe, the sad, sick boy desperately needing her help, and Mark, the scholarly neighbour, still mourning the death of his wife. For Laura, running away proved to be both emotive and deeply disturbing.
The first book in the Stephen Larkin series
Sober and disillusioned with London, tabloid journalist Stephen Larkin reluctantly accepts an assignment to cover a gangland funeral back home in Newcastle. Several years earlier he had left sick and disgusted, vowing never to return, but the pull of the city, and the promise of a juicy story, finally persuades him to return. While there, Larkin's old flame Charlotte asks him to check out the alleged suicide of her friend Mary - a course of action that will leave Larkin bruised, battered and with some painful memories of the city he was trying to forget. Dark, compelling and relentless, Mary's Prayer is a razor-edged crime debut from a powerful new voice in crime fiction.

Hardback
In London, Katie Byrne is an American actress on the verge of a triumph. But Katie seems barely aware of her charisma or her fortune. Caught up in a relentless quest for perfection onstage, Katie is not sure she will accept the career-making role she has been offered, even less sure that she could do justice to the part.

Suddenly, Katie seems incapable of taking the steps she has dreamed of taking all her life — of claiming her life as an actress and of letting a promising love affair blossom. For Katie, the answer lies in a past she has shared with almost no one, in the small Connecticut town where she was born and raised in an adoring, close-knit family.

There, on a fall day ten years before, tragedy crossed Katie Byrne’s path. Now she must return there — for answers, for a miracle, and for the kind of forgiveness that can set her free....

In the end, love is more important than everything and it will conquer and overcome anything. Or that's how Damon saw it, anyway. Damon wanted a book that talked a lot about love. Damon Courtenay died on the morning of April Fool's Day. in this tribute to his son, Bryce Courtenay lays bare the suffering behind this young man's life. Damon's story is one of lifelong struggle, his love for Celeste, the compassion of family, and a fight to the end for integrity. A testimony to the power of love, April Fool's Day is also about understanding: how when we confront our worst, we can become our best. This life-affirming book will change the way you think.
